Camunda Modeler is the free, open-source desktop tool for building BPMN that runs on a Camunda engine, and its canvas is bpmn-js, the same one BPMN Studio uses. You draw every element by hand and fill in execution details in a properties panel. Teams look for an alternative when they need the diagram before they need the execution, or when the people who know the process don't know the notation.
What Camunda Modeler is for
The Desktop Modeler runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. When you create a diagram it asks whether you target Camunda 7 or Camunda 8, then exposes the attributes that engine needs: job types, input and output mappings, forms, listeners and FEEL expressions. You can deploy straight from the app. Camunda 8 also has a browser-based Web Modeler for teams, with comments, versioning and a BPMN Copilot that drafts diagrams from a description inside Camunda 8.

Choose Camunda Modeler if you are wiring a process to a Camunda engine and want full control of every technical attribute. Choose BPMN Studio if the job is getting a correct process structure out of someone's head: describe it, answer the wizard's questions about triggers, roles, decisions and failure paths, and edit the result.
Using them together
The two cover different halves of the same job, and the hand-off is a file:
- Describe the process in BPMN Studio and refine the structure on the canvas: lanes, gateways, the exception paths.
- Export BPMN 2.0 XML (free on every plan). The process is flagged
isExecutable="false"and carries no vendor attributes, so it imports into Camunda cleanly. - Open it in Camunda Modeler, pick Camunda 7 or 8, set the process to executable, and add job types, forms and expressions.
