Emilis Mikalajūnas
Emilis Mikalajūnas is the creator of BPMN Studio and the author of the BPMN guides and comparisons on this site. BPMN Studio is an AI-powered BPMN 2.0 diagram generator he built as a 2026 university capstone project.
Background
The work behind BPMN Studio started from a research question — can AI meaningfully reduce the effort of business process modelling? — and turned into a working product. Building it meant going deep on the BPMN 2.0 standard (events, gateways, pools and lanes, the XML serialisation), on the bpmn-js rendering engine that Camunda and bpmn.io use, and on how large language models can be steered to produce standards-valid notation rather than plausible-looking pictures. The guides on this site come out of that hands-on work.
What I write about
- BPMN fundamentals — what BPMN is, the symbol reference, gateways, events, and pools and lanes.
- Practical modelling — how to create a BPMN diagram, common mistakes, and worked templates.
- Tool comparisons — honest, balanced write-ups like Best AI BPMN generators in 2026.
The research angle
BPMN Studio sits alongside a small body of academic work on LLMs and process models, including research on process-model representations for LLMs and BPMN generation assistants. The editorial principle across everything here is to write for people and stay honest — rank competitors fairly, name real trade-offs, and cite primary sources.
